Gynecological Ultrasound in Silver Spring or Laurel

A gynecologic / pelvic ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging technique to provide an internal view of the female reproductive system using high-frequency sound waves. There are two types commonly used, including transvaginal and transabdominal. Both are non-invasive and painless, and they are used to detect and diagnose gynecological conditions such as fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometrial concerns, and pelvic inflammatory disease.

Why Would My Gynecologist Recommend I Have an Ultrasound?

Your gynecologist may recommend a gynecologic ultrasound if you experience symptoms such as abnormal vaginal bleeding such as bleeding between periods and / or heavy periods, painful periods, or pelvic discomfort. It may also be used if you have abnormal results from a pelvic exam.

How Do I Prepare?

It depends on the type of ultrasound you are having. If you are having a transabdominal ultrasound, you may be asked to drink water beforehand so your bladder is full, which helps to get a better image of your uterus and ovaries.

If you are having a transvaginal ultrasound, you will be asked to empty your bladder beforehand. You will need to undress from the waist down and wear a medical gown.

What Should I Expect During and After an Ultrasound?

During the procedure, you will be lying down on an exam table. Your feet may be placed in stirrups.

For a transabdominal ultrasound, a gel is applied to your abdomen. A lubricated medical device is inserted into your vagina during a transvaginal exam.

The technician will move the ultrasound device around to capture images of your reproductive organs. It typically takes less than 30 minutes from start to finish.

Afterward, your ultrasound technician will send the images to your women’s health specialist for review, and they will follow up with you about the results.
