Obstetrics Q & A

What is Obstetrics?

Obstetrics is a field of medical care involving preconception planning, pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum care. Obstetricians are medical doctors who receive special training in all areas of pregnancy to maximize health and prevent disease.

The dedicated team of obstetricians at Capital Women’s Care consists of physicians, nurse-midwives, and physicians assistants who have served patients in the Washington, D.C., area for decades. The medical team treats pregnant women of all ages, from low- to high-risk.

What Services Do Obstetricians Provide?

The OB/GYN specialists at Capital Women’s Care provide numerous services and use the latest technological advancements. Examples of services include:

  • Comprehensive prenatal care
  • Individualized medical attention, including second opinions
  • 3D and 4D ultrasounds
  • Specialized surgical procedures
  • Consultations with specialists for high-risk pregnancies
  • Infertility evaluations
  • In-office blood draws

Providers at Capital Women’s Care speak English, Spanish, Hebrew, and French, and they provide top-notch care in a comfortable and serene environment.

What Should I Expect During Obstetrics Appointments?

Each obstetrics appointment is different, depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy. Your medical provider will let you know when to make an initial appointment and how often to come in after that. The further along you are in your pregnancy, the more often you’ll need to come in for appointments.

At obstetrics appointments, the medical experts at Capital Women’s Care may:

  • Have you leave a urine sample to assess kidney function, hydration status, and potential health concerns
  • Check your heart rate and blood pressure
  • Order lab work to ensure you and your baby are healthy
  • Check your baby’s heartbeat
  • Recommend sonograms to check on you or your baby

Your doctor may also have you complete a blood-sugar test by drinking a sugary beverage and checking your blood-sugar level afterward. This test screens for signs of gestational diabetes.

When you’re ready to deliver your baby, the nurturing medical team at Capital Women’s Care will be right by your side. The providers are affiliated with Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland, where deliveries take place. The hospital has full anesthesia services, private postpartum maternity suites, and neonatal intensive care units.

If you want a top-of-the-line obstetrical team to help you, from planning your pregnancy to postpartum care, schedule an appointment with Capital Women’s Care online or over the phone today.
