Heavy bleeding between periods can be concerning, especially when it happens unexpectedly or becomes a recurring problem. Although changes in your menstrual cycle can have several causes, cervical polyps are one possible explanation.
These small growths are usually benign, but knowing their symptoms and when they need attention can help you make informed decisions about your reproductive health.
What Are Cervical Polyps?
Cervical polyps are small growths that develop on the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. They may appear as a single growth or in groups and can vary in size.
Many are discovered during routine pelvic examinations because they do not always cause noticeable symptoms. The exact cause is not always clear.
Hormonal changes, inflammation, and irritation of cervical tissue may contribute to their development. Most cervical polyps are noncancerous, and cancerous changes are uncommon.
However, a healthcare provider should evaluate unusual bleeding or any growth found during an examination.
What Symptoms Should You Watch For?
Some people with cervical polyps experience no symptoms. Others notice changes in their usual menstrual patterns or bleeding at unexpected times.
Common symptoms may include:
- Heavy bleeding between periods: Spotting or bleeding outside your usual menstrual cycle.
- Bleeding after sex: Contact with the cervix may cause an irritated polyp to bleed.
- Heavier menstrual bleeding: Your periods may become heavier than usual.
- Bleeding after menopause: Any vaginal bleeding after menopause requires medical evaluation.
- Unusual vaginal discharge: Some people notice changes in discharge, although this symptom can have other causes.
These symptoms do not automatically mean you have cervical polyps. Hormonal changes, infections, uterine fibroids, and other gynecologic conditions can also cause abnormal bleeding.
Keeping track of when bleeding occurs, how long it lasts, and whether other symptoms appear can help your OB-GYN determine what evaluation may be appropriate.
When Do Cervical Polyps Need Treatment?
Not every cervical polyp needs immediate removal. If a growth is small and causes no symptoms, your provider may recommend monitoring it based on its appearance and your medical history.
Minimally invasive removal may be recommended when a polyp causes repeated bleeding, produces bothersome symptoms, or has an unusual appearance. The procedure is often performed in an outpatient setting.
Depending on the polyp’s size and location, a clinician may use an instrument to grasp and remove the growth. The removed tissue may be sent to a laboratory for examination.
This helps confirm the diagnosis and check for abnormal cells. Although removal is generally straightforward, temporary spotting or mild cramping may occur afterward.
Your provider will explain what to expect and whether follow-up care is necessary.
When Should You See an OB-GYN for Heavy Bleeding Between Periods?
Schedule an appointment if you experience repeated bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, or a noticeable change in your menstrual cycle. Do not assume these symptoms are caused by cervical polyps without an examination.
Identifying the underlying cause helps your provider recommend appropriate care.
Seek urgent medical attention if you experience very heavy bleeding, particularly if you feel faint, dizzy, or weak. Bleeding after menopause should also be evaluated promptly, even when it is light.
